Mae is on a mission to reduce maternal health disparities. Mae Health, Inc. (“Mae,” “we”, or “us” or “our”) is committed to respecting the privacy and protecting the personal information of all users (“users,” “you” or “your”). This privacy policy describes how Mae collects, uses, and shares Personal Information collected through our website at meetmae.com and all other related platforms provided by us (collectively, the “Services”). We have established and implemented this Privacy Policy to inform you of the information we collect from you in connection with the Services, how we collect and use your information, with whom and for what purposes we may share your information, and the choices you can make about our use of your information.

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. This Privacy Policy, along with our Terms of Service, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety, constitute a legally binding agreement between you and Mae that conditions your use of our Services. By using the Services, you consent to the privacy practices described in this Privacy Policy and the terms of Mae’s Terms of Service, where and as permitted by applicable law. If you do not consent to these practices, please do not provide us any personal information or use any of the Services. We reserve the right to terminate or limit your access to our Services.

Information Mae Collects

In order to better provide you with Services, we may collect, process and store Personal Information about you. For the purposes of this Privacy Policy, “Personal Information” means contact information (e.g., name, address, email address, mailing address, telephone number) and any other information that identifies, relates to, describes, is reasonably capable of being associated with, or could be reasonably linked, directly or indirectly, with a particular consumer, device or household.

This Privacy Policy does not cover information that may be considered Protected Health Information (“PHI”) under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”). For information on your rights and our practices under HIPAA, please visit our HIPAA Policy.

By providing credentials to create a Mae account, you acknowledge that you understand our collection and use of personal data, as described in this Privacy Policy.

You can always decline to provide Personal Information to us—it is your choice, and you are under no obligation to provide Personal Information to us. However, if you decide not to provide such information, then you may not be able to access or use certain Services, or request or access certain information or materials from Mae.

Categories of Information We May Collect

We collect the following categories of personal information about you:

  • Identifiers, such as your name, date of birth, due date, and insurance member ID,
  • Contact information, such as your email address and phone number,
  • Login information, such as your username and password,
  • Internet protocol (IP) address (and related IP-address based location information),
  • The type of device/operating system/browser used to access our Services, as well as
  • Web analytics data such as your web page interactions, referring webpage/source through which you accessed our Services, or other statistical information.

We will also collect any personal information that you provide us through communications with us.

How We May Collect Your Personal Information

  • Information You Provide: When you sign up for a Mae account you provide us with information about yourself such as your name, due date, date of birth, email address, and health insurance member ID. You may also choose to provide us with other information such as your phone number. Providing a phone number is not required.
  • Information We Collect Automatically: When you use Mae, we collect certain information about you automatically such as your IP address, location, information about your device, operating system, and mobile network, and information about your usage of the service. This information may be collected through cookies, which are further explained in the “Use of Cookies” section below.
  • Information We Get From Others: Certain features of our site are facilitated by outside third parties. For example, if your health plan offers covered benefits that can be provided by Mae Health, your health plan may provide us with your contact information, personal information, and a limited amount of your PHI. Mae Health does not purchase your information from third-party data brokers.

How Does Mae Use My Personal Information?

The following are examples of how we may use your personal information; this is not an exhaustive list.

  • To Provide You with the Services You Request: We may use your Personal Information to provide you with a personalized experience, such as showing you information relevant to your stage of pregnancy or suggesting available benefits or resources based on your location and health plan.
  • To Communicate with You: We may use your contact information to, for example, periodically send you updates about Mae, to provide you with technical support, or to send other administrative messages. We may also send you optional user satisfaction surveys.
    • You may opt out of email communications from Mae by following the unsubscribe link contained at the bottom of each email we send to you.
    • If you have opted into text message (SMS) communications, you may opt out by clicking the opt out link at the bottom of each text message we send to you.
    • If you have any questions about opting out or how to opt out of specific categories of communication, please email privacy@meetmae.com.
  • For Our Marketing Purposes: We may use your Personal Information to provide news and updates about Mae’s Services that may be of interest to you.
    • You can opt out of these promotional communications at any time by emailing privacy@meetmae.com. You may also opt out of all email communications from Mae by following the unsubscribe link contained at the bottom of each email we send to you.
    • If you have opted into text message (SMS) communications, you may opt out by clicking the opt out link at the bottom of each text message we send to you.
    • If you have any questions about opting out or how to opt out of specific categories of communication, please email privacy@meetmae.com.
  • For Our Business Purposes: We may use your Personal Information to analyze, operate, maintain, and improve the Service including but not limited to conducting internal research and development, developing new features, and bettering existing ones.
  • For Legal Obligations: We may use your Personal Information to fulfill our legal obligations, including compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, court orders, and other legal obligations.

How Does Mae Share My Personal Information?

The following are examples of how we may share your personal information; this is not an exhaustive list:

  • Organizations with Whom we Contract: This applies to users where Mae provides a covered benefit under your health plan. We share information about you with the health plan to facilitate collaboration and to maximize what you get out of our Services.
  • Service Providers: We may share your Personal Information with third-party vendors and service providers working on our behalf to provide services such as analytics, data security, and data hosting, processing, and storage in order to operate and improve our Services. Mae’s third parties are contractually required to protect your information with the same care and security as Mae Health. Third parties are not allowed to use your information except to provide services to Mae.
  • Business Transfers: We may choose to buy or sell assets, and may share and/or transfer customer information in connection with the evaluation of and entry into such transactions. Also, if we (or our assets) are acquired, or if we go out of business, enter bankruptcy, or go through some other change of control, Personal Information could be one of the assets transferred to or acquired by a third party. Any entity acquiring our business or assets would have an obligation to use the Personal Information we possess strictly in accordance with this Privacy Policy. You acknowledge that such transfers may occur, and that any acquirer of us or our assets may continue to use your Personal Information only as set forth in this policy, unless that acquirer has your consent in compliance with applicable law.
  • Legal Obligations: We may share Personal Information when we believe in good faith that an applicable law requires it; at the request of law enforcement, judicial authorities (e.g. upon receipt of a court order or subpoena), appropriate governmental authorities; to detect and protect against fraud, or any technical or security vulnerabilities; to respond to an emergency; or otherwise to protect the rights, property, safety or security of third parties, users of our Services, our businesses, or the public. We may share Personal Information with the health experts you have chosen to schedule or access through our website. We do not sell, rent, or lease our customer lists to third parties.

How Does Mae Secure My Personal Information?

We take steps to secure Personal Information through administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect against the risk of accidental, unlawful, or unauthorized destruction, loss, alteration, access, disclosure, or use. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee the security of information transmitted through the Internet. Where you have chosen a password to use Mae’s Services, you are responsible for keeping this password confidential.

Anonymized and Aggregated Information

We may also anonymize and aggregate Personal Information we have collected so that you are not identified as an individual, and we may use and disclose such information in a number of ways, including research, public health analysis, and any other legally permissible purposes.

Use of Cookies

Cookies are text files with small pieces of data that are used to identify your computer while you are on our network. We also use web beacons, such as pixel tags, to do the same. For the purposes of this policy, the term “cookies” refers to both cookies and web beacons.

We automatically collect your IP address, the Advertising ID number of your mobile device, data about your mobile device such as operating system, and data about your activity on our website. To facilitate automation collection of data about your device and activity, we store cookies on your device.

You can instruct your browser, by changing its options, to stop accepting Cookies or to prompt you before accepting a Cookie from the websites you visit.

The Kinds of Cookies We Use

  • Strictly Necessary Cookies – These cookies are essential to providing you with the services and features of Mae’s website. Without them certain aspects of the Mae service will be unavailable.
  • Functional Cookies – These cookies record your settings and preferences, which enable us to personalize your experience with Mae.
  • Performance & Analytics Cookies – These cookies collect information on how you use the website, such as which webpage you visited and how long you viewed that page. We use this information to better understand and improve Mae’s services.
  • Advertising and Marketing Cookies – These cookies help us offer personalized and relevant advertising and marketing messages.

Data Retention

Mae generally retains data collected about you only as long as it is needed to fulfill our business purposes, or as may be required to comply with applicable laws, regulations, or other legal obligations. When determining the appropriate retention period for Personal Information, we take into account various criteria, such as the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the Personal Information; potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure; purposes for which we process your Personal Information; whether we can achieve those purposes through other means; and business operations and legal requirements. Because we maintain our Services to protect from accidental or malicious loss and destruction, residual copies of your Personal Information may be retained in our backup and archival systems for a limited period of time, after which the information will be automatically deleted or put beyond use where deletion is not possible. You may request that we delete your data at any time (see “Modifying, Accessing, and Deleting Your Personal Information”).

Modifying, Accessing, and Deleting Your Personal Information

  • Modifying or Correcting Your Personal Information: You may modify certain Personal Information at any time. You can do so by visiting your profile page on Mae’s website or by emailing us privacy@meetmae.com.
  • Accessing Your Personal Information: You have the right to access your Personal Information. To request access to this data please email us at privacy@meetmae.com. Note that we need to verify your identity in order to provide you with your Personal Information.
  • Deleting Your Personal Information: You have the right to request that we delete your Personal Information by closing your account. To close your account please email us at privacy@meetmae.com.
  • Object to us processing your information: You can ask us to stop using your information for certain purposes, including when we use your information to send you marketing emails or text (SMS) messages. If you opt-out of receiving marketing messages from us, we may still send you updates about your account, such as reminders of upcoming sessions you have scheduled.

Data Storage and Security

All information gathered on Mae’s website is encrypted for secure storage and encrypted if and when transported over the network. The data we collect is transferred to servers located in the US of our cloud computing provider, Amazon Web Services (“AWS”).

Although we make every effort to safeguard the privacy of your data, we cannot guarantee the security of any information transmitted online. Mae assumes no liability for disclosure of any of your Personal Information due to errors in transmission or other causes beyond our reasonable control.

We Do Not Sell Your Personal Information

We do not sell your Personal Information, and do not disclose and have not disclosed your Personal Information to any other third parties for any purpose other than those described in this Privacy Policy or unless the law requires it. We, also, will not sell your Personal Information without affirmative authorization.

Do-Not-Track Signals

Certain mechanisms may allow you to send web browser signals, known as “Do Not Track” (“DNT”) signals, indicating your choice to disable tracking on the Website. We do not respond to browser do not track signals at this time. More information about “do not track” is available at www.allaboutdnt.org.

Children

Mae’s Services are not directed to children and users must be over 13 years of age to register for our Services. Mae does not knowingly nor willingly collect, retain, use or disclose any information or documents from anyone under the age of 13. If you are under the age of 13, please do not use Mae and/or our Services and do not provide us any Personal Information. If we learn that Personal Information of persons less than 13 years-of-age has been collected through Mae, we will take the appropriate steps to delete this information. If you are a parent or guardian and discover that your child or a minor under the age of 13 has posted, submitted or otherwise communicated Personal Information in connection with our Services without your consent, please contact us at privacy@meetmae.com so that we may take appropriate actions to remove the Personal Information of the minor under 13 years from our systems.

Third Party Sites and Links

Our Services may contain hyperlinks to other online platforms operated by third parties. You should be aware that, once you leave our site, we do not control, operate or endorse in any respect information, products or services provided by third parties. Many third parties have their own Privacy Policies that differ from ours. This Privacy Policy only covers our Services and does not cover any other third parties.

State-specific disclosures

If you are a California resident: At this time, Mae Health’s Services do not meet criteria subject to the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA).

If you are a Virginia resident: At this time, Mae Health’s Services do not meet criteria subject to the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA).

Please note that these laws may not apply to, among other things,

  • Information that is lawfully made available from federal, state, or local government records;
  • Consumer information that is deidentified or aggregated;
  • Protected health information that is collected by a covered entity or business associate governed by HIPAA; or
  • Medical information maintained by a provider of health care governed by California's Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (CMIA).

International Users

The Websites are controlled and operated by us from the United States and are not intended to subject us to the laws or jurisdiction of any state, country or territory other than that of the United States. Any information you provide to us through use of our Websites may be stored and processed, transferred between and accessed from the United States and other countries that may not guarantee the same level of protection of personal data as the one in which you reside. However, we will handle your Personal Information in accordance with this Privacy Policy regardless of where your Personal Information is stored/accessed.

Changes to this policy

Mae may occasionally modify this Privacy Policy by posting an updated version of the Policy here. Any changes will be effective immediately. We encourage you to review this page periodically for the latest information on our Privacy Policy.
